Highlights from 2013 Second Annual Global Technology Impact Forum

More than 75 professionals from over 50 international organizations, including the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, gathered last week at WIPO’s Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland to participate during the Second Annual LESI Global Technology Impact Forum (GTIF).

Second Global Technology Impact Forum Scheduled for January 2013

As my travels as LESI President near an end, I am excited to assist President Elect Kevin Nachtrab and GTIF 2013 Co-Chairs Hector Chagoya (President, LES Mexico) and Martin Schneider (President, LES Switzerland) in planning for the second Global Technology Impact Forum (GTIF) taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, on January 20-22, 2013.

Patents for Humanity - New USPTO Humanitarian Initiative

On Wednesday I watched as David Kappos announced the USPTO’s new humanitarian initiative – Patents for Humanity.

“Innovation is 99% about failure, which is expensive,” Kappos said. He’s completely right.

Spurring Economic Growth Using Intangible Assets

I have long noted that although the U.S. IP market is the envy of the world, not enough attention has been paid to the role of governmental policy to further our leadership edge. This is troubling in light of the oft reported efforts of European, Asian and now the Mid-East efforts to build a technology-based economy using IP as a tool for growth.

I just finished three days attending the LES Asia Pacific Regional Conference chaired by Audrey Yap, President of LES Singapore. Attendance was strong and, although largely from the region, there was notable participation from Europe and the Americas.

My final stop in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was a small group discussion with the Executive Director of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, Fouad Mrad, members of the local Licensing Executives Society (LES) Arab Countries Chapter, and other invited guests.

We continued the discussion of intellectual property as a tool for economic development.

Yesterday I attended a most interesting meeting of the Licensing Executives Society Arab Countries Chapter held in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Higher Colleges of Technology. The meeting was held at one of Abu Dhabi's leading science centers, the CERT Technology Park.
