Ocean Tomo Managing Director Robert McSorley, JD, CPA has been named the co-chair for the Illinois Intellectual Property Alliance (ILIPA) membership committee.
The ILIPA highlights key events of interest to Illinois creator, protectors, and enablers of intellectual property. It also supports programs that improve the education and awareness of intellectual property including the Chicago Science Fair, Girls4Science, and the ILIPA Mentor Program.
The mission of ILIPA is to serve as a connecting hub for local and regional organizations, fostering an effective ecosystem and marketplace to facilitate the creation, protection, and enablement of intellectual property. This connecting hub will encourage innovation for the economic and social well-being of Illinois citizens. The Alliance will be a founding chapter to the United States Intellectual Property Alliance (USIPA).
The ILIPA is comprised of professionals representing interests from academia, advisory services, banking and finance, business and community organizations, law, incubators and accelerators, not-for-profit organizations, public and private companies, and research laboratories.
Robert McSorley, JD, CPA is a Managing Director in Ocean Tomo’s Intellectual Property Disputes Financial Experts practice out of the firm’s Chicago headquarters. This practice area quantifies financial damages arising from intellectual property disputes and provides general litigation support.
Mr. McSorley has 30 years of experience addressing the economic, financial, and accounting issues concerning commercial litigation. Mr. McSorley has focused on intellectual property disputes since 1998 and regularly evaluates the measures and amounts of monetary recovery for infringement/ misappropriation. He has offered expert testimony in federal courts and in depositions on dozens of occasions, and courts and juries have adopted his opinions and conclusions.
Mr. McSorley is regularly retained by pharmaceutical firms involved with Hatch-Waxman litigation. Mr. McSorley has been involved in Paragraph IV disputes since 2005. In connection with these engagements, Mr. McSorley evaluates financial and economic evidence relating to the issue of commercial success, a secondary indicium of non-obviousness. In addition, he regularly evaluates allegations of irreparable harm. Through his work in these engagements, Mr. McSorley has gained experience with certain economic aspects of the US pharmaceutical industry, such as the profitability of the US Fortune 500 pharmaceutical firms and their ability to finance and recover R&D costs.
Mr. McSorley holds a B.A. degree in Accounting from the Pennsylvania State University and a J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. He is a CPA and a licensed attorney. Mr. McSorley is a member of the Licensing Executives Society, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Federal Circuit Bar Association.
